Se ha trabajado intensamente en la valorización de residuos mediante su conversión en diferentes productos a través de procesos termoquímicos como la pirólisis, gasificación y combustión. En la actualidad se trabaja con el concepto de "residuo cero" y "biorefinería". Se pretende valorizar los residuos extrayéndoles compuestos de valor agregado tales como polifenoles y pectinas y a estos residuos someterlos a un tratamiento termoquímico.
