According to general opinion, detective fiction stabilizes its circulation in Latin America between the end of the thirties and the beginning of the forties. This stabilization relates, among other items, to the theorization presented by writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Alfonso Reyes or Xavier Villaurrutia. This essay develops the hypothesis that the ideology of such theorization has its origin in the practice of the avant-gardes. However, during their prime, the avant-gardes practice and reflection on the genre is qualitatively different. So that it seems possible to think the emergence of detective fiction in Latin America as a coalition between the avant-gardes inheritance and a new cultural market. To inquire into this hypothesis, avant-garde essays and stories set in the detective genre horizon and signed by Alejo Carpentier, Pablo Palacio, Arqueles Vela y Héctor Poveda will be analyzed.
