According to general opinion, detective fiction stabilizes its circulation in Latin America between the end of the thirties and the beginning of the forties. This stabilization relates, among other items, to the theorization presented by writers such as Jorge Luis Borges, Alfonso Reyes or Xavier Villaurrutia. This essay develops the hypothesis that the ideology of such theorization has its origin in the practice of the avant-gardes. However, during their prime, the avant-gardes practice and reflection on the genre is qualitatively different.
