In maize, two diseases that occur annually in Argentina are common rust (CR) and common smut (CS). Phenotypical variability evaluation is transcendental to use the genetic resources available. Maize inbred lines provided by CIMMYT are promissory to be evaluated to CR and CS reaction in south Córdoba, Argentina. Association mapping studies require germplasm variability evaluation. The objectives of this work were i) evaluate phenotypically a CIMMYT maize inbred line group to CR and CS and ii) analyze the phenotypic variability to CR and CS in these inbred lines group. A total of 190 genotypes were used on this study. A partially repeated design with a 10% of the genotypes repeated was used. Common rust severity and common smut incidence and other agro-morphological traits were measured. Principal components analysis was used to analyze the data. Also, generalized heritability 𝐻̅2 of the adjusted means was calculated to common rust severity and common smut incidence. Sampacho had a higher CR severity, while Río Cuarto had a higher CS incidence. In the principal components analysis, three principal components explained a 72% of total variability. Maize inbred lines have variability that may be useful in association mapping studies to identify resistant loci to common rust and common smut.
