In recent years, a locally restricted but potentially far-reaching and interesting debate surrounding the issue of biocultural continuity/discontinuity in the southeastern Pampas of Argentina emerged. Two well differentiated models are identifiable in the literature: one proposing that the peopling and regional cultural evolution was a rather continuous and transformative process, and another suggesting that the prehispanic population history of the Pampas was not a long-lasting continuous process but a punctuated one, in which depopulation, recolonization and population replacement events may have occurred. The aim of this paper is to lay the groundwork for a more fruitful dialogue between the proponents of both conceptions by showing that a substantial amount of the discussion around these two models could be solved if the meaning ascribed to certain terms is clarified, and the fundamental differences between the bodies of evidence advanced in support of each model are recognized.
