Combined Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) and Fructooligosaccharides(FOS) are mainly added to infant formula to promote the prevalence of a microbiotacomposition similar to that resulting from breast-fed infants. Their efficacyevaluated in pediatric population had methodological limitations and theirmechanisms are still under debate. According to our knowledge they are notexperimental studies during the high growth period in order to determine thepotential bone health benefits of the consumption of GOS/FOS containing infantformula. The present study comparatively explored the effects of feeding two similarinfant formulas one containing 5.3% of GOS/FOS (D+) and the second without them(D−) vs. the rodents recommended diet (AIN93) in rats from weaning to 40 days ofage. At weaning male Wistar rats (40?47 g) received either AIN93-G diet or D+ andD− formulae for 3 weeks (ws). Changes in body weight rate (BWR) and lactic acidbacteria (LAB) content (log CFU/g feces in MRS agar) were evaluated. At sacrifice, caecal pH, total skeleton bone mineral content (teBMC/BW) and density (teBMD)(Lunar DXA), and femur BMD (fBMD) and weight (FW) were also evaluated. Results(mean±SD) are in Table 1.
