Furan derivatives can be obtained from natural resources, and their synthesis, characterization and processing have been explored from long ago. Nevertheless, their use has been resurged due to the global intends of replacing petroleum-based materials, and the utilization of furan-based monomers to develop new materials have grown exponentially during the last decades. The aim of this chapter is to emphasize the unique features of furan chemistry and structure that provide very versatile method... Nevertheless, their use has been resurged due to the global intends of replacing petroleum-based materials, and the utilization of furan-based monomers to develop new materials have grown exponentially during the last decades. The aim of this chapter is to emphasize the unique features of furan chemistry and structure that provide very versatile methods to generate a great variety of materials. This description will be done with a practical approach, by showing a wide selection of applications involving different areas, ranging from simple solvents to smart and high performance materials. The latest developments in the use of furan derivatives in the emerging and highly promising field of nanotechnology will be also highlighted.
