Resumen *

The objective of this paper is the analysis of the evolution of agricultural land productivity in the southwestern region of Buenos Aires (SOB) during the period 1970-2010, as well as a comparison with the same indicator at country level. Since the latter has been obtained using Divisia indices in its discrete version (Index Tórnqvist - Theil) identical methodology is here applied. In this preliminary version only Agricultural Land Productivity could be obtained because of the lack of complete information needed in order to calculate Total Factors Productivity. While the indicator at country level shows a significant growing trend in the productivity of agricultural land, the results at regional level show a slightly downward one (nearly constant). This may be considered the principal cause of the socioeconomic deterioration observed in the SOB in recent years in which the region could not reverse the change in the relative share of crops.
