Adolescent consumption of alcohol (hereinafter also reffered as ethanol) is considered a significant public health problem across the globe. In the US the Monitor for the Future longitudinal study reported that 7 out 10 adolescents will have consumed alcohol by the end of high school (Johnston et al., 2009). Recent US studies indicate that the highest prevalence of alcohol dependence takes place in subjects between 18 to 24 years old (NIAAA, 2004-2005). Problematic alcohol consumption during adolescence is also observed throughout South America, with lifetime prevalence of alcohol consumption in adolescents 12-17 years old closely around 50% in Brazil (Galduróz & Carlini 2007), Argentina (Alderete et al., 2008) and México (Rojas-Guiot et al., 1999). Moreover, a recent study birth cohort study conducted in Pelotas (Brazil) indicated that almost 20% of children aged 11-12 years had already experimented with alcohol (Noal et al., 2003). In the latter study early onset of alcohol use was associated with maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy, whereas the Alderete et al. study revealed symtomps of alcohol dependence in 12% and 19% of girls and boys, respectively.
