The release of air pollutantsfrom various industries is a major source of environmental contamination.Implementing measures to clean emissions before they are discharged into theatmosphere has become a critical strategy for managing gaseous contaminants. Inthis context, biochar derived from biomass treatment has emerged as a valuableand sustainable solution for addressing air pollution challenges, not only dueto its sorbent capacity but also for its low-cost and renewable nature. However, the characteristics of biochar, including physical and chemicalproperties, are strongly influenced by the type of biomass used, thepreparation methods, and the specific modification conditions. Consequently, biochar’s effectiveness and capacity to reduce air pollutants can varysignificantly. This chapter explores biochar’s efficiency in removing gaseouspollutants, emphasizing its physicochemical attributes. It discusses biocharpreparation and modification methods, examines factors affecting pollutantremoval efficiency, and delves into thermodynamics, kinetics, and isothermadsorption models. Additionally, it presents a description of biocharregeneration and disposal is presented. Finally, existing constraints andknowledge gaps are discussed, underscoring the necessity for further researchto realize the full potential of biochar as a practical approach for gascleaning and air pollution control.
