Personality and language have shared a common path for centuries. Many studies have analyzed individual differences based on the words used. However, all these studies have used the same methodology: narratives. The present study aims to analyze this association using an alternative methodology that is quicker to administer and examine: the inquiry of subjective frequency of use or subjective lexical frequency. To this end, a quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational study was conducted in which 123 women from the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (Argentina) were evaluated using the Big Five Inventory and a questionnaire on the subjective frequency of use of nouns and adjectives with different emotional valence. Correlation analyses, exploratory factor analysis and linear regressions were performed to evaluate the fit of the models. Results showed that Neuroticism was positively associated with the subjective frequency of use of words with negative valence, while Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion and Agreeableness were positively associated with words with positive valence. Factor analysis identified three distinct lexical factors according to affective valence (negative, positive, and nonspecific). The negative factor was primarily explained by Neuroticism, while the positive factor was explained by Conscientiousness and Openness to Experience. The results suggest that the subjective frequency of word use constitutes a valid tool for studying the relationship between language and personality, partially replicating previous findings through a quick and non-intrusive methodology.
