Teleological thinking (i.e., goal-directed thinking) is considered one of the main obstacles to understanding the Theory of Natural Selection (TNS). In contrast with the traditional didactic perspective aiming to change students’ teleological conceptions, cognitive psychology describes teleology as an intrinsic mode of thinking in the human mind that cannot be entirely eliminated. Additionally, from an epistemological standpoint, various forms of teleology exist, further complicating the comprehension of the theory. Thus, we rely on the theoretical frameworks of epistemological obstacles and metacognition to propose that the main educational objective should be the development of students’ “metacognitive vigilance” (MV) regarding their teleological intuitions. This means that students should be able to understand what teleological thinking entails, identify its different forms of expression, and distinguish when teleological thinking is scientifically legitimate or illegitimate within a specific context. On this occasion, we propose a possible progression hypothesis for teaching this “vigilance.” We have identified five stages in the progression of metacognitive vigilance of teleological thinking, with “Does not know what teleological thinking is” as the first stage and “Knows what teleological thinking is, can recognize its expressions, and judges it contextually” as the fifth stage. We suggest that the proposed progression hypothesis is a useful analytical tool for decision-making in teaching TNS regarding the problem of teleology, as well as for designing research to create new and improved teaching strategies.
