The concept of emotional intelligence (EI) was introduced to the scientific community 25 years ago, generating numerous written and research outputs alongside substantial scientific evidence. This article aims to describe, differentiate, and summarise the most prominent models and approaches developed during this period, including ability, trait, and mixed models. We endeavour to review the measurement instruments each approach has developed, their Spanish adaptations, and their predictive capacity. Additionally, we include recent methods that complement trait and ability approaches. The EI research and application field is extensive, with much yet to be analysed and demonstrated. However, there is no doubt about its significance in our ever-changing and challenging world.
