A recent expedition to northern Uruguay revealed the presence of the characidiine fish Characidium serrano Buckup & Reis, 1997, which represents the first record of this species for the country, extending its distribution in about 300 km to the south. Comparison of new sequences of the COI marker with those previously published, indicates a greater affinity of C. serrano to C. clistenesi than to C. pterostictum. The phylogenetic reconstruction carried out for the genus based on COI recovers Characidium as monophyletic but with little support and composed of two main clades. The first mainly brings together species with a pectoral region and isthmus with varying degrees of absence of scales, and contains C. fasciatum, the type species of the genus. The other clade (in which C. serrano would be found), brings together species with a pectoral and isthmus area completely scaled and contains C. tenue, type species of Chorimycterus, that is the oldest subjective junior synonym of Characidium. Finally we indicate C. serrano as an endangered species for Uruguay considering its restricted distribution in the country Información suministrada por el agente en SIGEVAPalabras Clave
