During the last decades, large areas of the City of Buenos Aires were target of exclusive urban renewal processes, carried out by big real estate developers in agreement with the governments in power. The effects of this real estate outpost included a general increase in land prices that exceeded the city limits and overstepped neighboring districts. In this context, the municipality of Avellaneda was one of the emblematic territories, being the destination of numerous urban renewal interventions. Among these, the Estrella del Sur Project (so-called “White Elephant of Avellaneda) stood out. It was an unfinished urbanistic project of enormous scale, which involved the construction of four 250 ft high towers with 924 apartments, in which, through of pre-sale mechanisms, more than 200 families were defrauded and lost their savings. This article attempts to carry out a historical and financial reconstruction of the process, addressing two central tasks. On the one hand, examine the appeal to values of security and status associated with the imaginary of the “homeownership” as a discursive mechanism of real estate agents when it comes to gaining trust among buyers. On the other hand, analyze the processes and stakeholders involved in the capitalist production of large-scale real estate commodities.
