Resumen

In February 1999, Martha Nussbaum published «The Professor of Parody» in The New Republic where she attacks Judith Butler’s gender theory. According to Nussbaum, Butler’s problem is that it leads us towards political quietism because instead of arguing for radical structural changes she reduces politics to parody and subversive laughter. The goal of this paper is to reconstruct, analyze and put into question Nussbaum’s critique. For this, I shall introduce an alternative interpretation of Butler’s early work that seeks to prove that far from leading towards political retreat, her notion of subversion can be an useful resource for thinking about social transformation.
