This work focuses on the analysis of a textile, by integrating different “layers” (structural, aesthetic, taxonomical), and different observation scales (macro and microscopic). This work focuses on the analysis of a textile, by integrating different “layers” (structural, aesthetic, taxonomical), and different observation scales (macro and microscopic). This approach is complemented by an examination of the artefactual and spatio-temporal context associated with the fabric (Antofagasta de la Sierra, ca. 1200 years A.D.). This includes the use of various physico-chemical characterization techniques: X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (SEM-EDS), and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), as well as forensic studies. Based on an animistic and relational worldview, and supported by historical and ethnographic information from the southern Andean area, an active role (agency) for the different textile features identified in the successive contexts of use/function of the fabric is proposed. These elements materialize the “assembly” of different combined entities in the textile, which is interpreted within the framework of Andean rituality practices, linked with propitiatory offerings
