Resumen

Until monetary unification was achieved in the 1880s, the currency in circulation among the Argentine inland provinces was mainly composed by Bolivian silver coins. Commonly known as the “Bolivian peso”, the operating dynamics of this currency has not been adequately addressed by the extant literature. Therefore, this article offers new insights to explain the mid and long-term consequences generated by that situation, periodizing the phenomenon according to its ups and downs. On the one hand, a detailed analysis is made of the evolution of the “Bolivian peso”. On the other, we present long time price series of Bolivian pesos in gold ounces, for four key Argentine cities: Santa Fe, Córdoba, Tucumán and Buenos Aires. The results suggest the existence of three clearly delimited areas of monetary circulation, beyond the “monetary anarchy” that the literature has identified.
