Resumen

In South America, most migrants arrive to cities, especially metropolitan ones. Often this reflects expulsion from rural areas in countries of origin and exclusion in destination countries. The article analyzes the spatial dimensions of migration from a dialogue between perspectives of political ecology, urban and migration studies. It focused on the experiencies of Paraguayan rural women and their adaptation in two neighbourhoods next to the Reconquista River Basin. It is an area of urban segregation, housing deficit and environmental degradation but also has dense community networks to cope with the difficulties. The study combined an ethnogrphic metodolody with a participatory action research to conduct interviews with women and participant observation in their community-based organizations. The analysis showed that the inequalities experienced by migrant women are related to extractive economic processes in both agricultural and urban spaces. Likewise, the intersection between national origin and gender configure specific spatial inequalities for women but it also produces resilience reflected in the strategies of social production of habitat in this context.
