Starting from the popular edition of the complete works of sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, prepared by Alfonso Méndez Plancarte and Alberto Salceda, we will analyze the constant absence of the preliminary texts of her first editions (1689, 1692, 1700) and what this entails for the conformation of sor Juana’s work. Then, we will take a closer look into the importance of preliminary texts in Inundación Castálida, printed thanks to the condesa de Paredes, who projected the figure and work of the nun outside local boundaries. However, the legitimation strategies these texts show are not consistent, but they debate between each other while displaying the alternate and parallel paths to an author’s institutionalization that is still a controversial issue. This article will unveil these debates that, in the prelimianaries, have the figure and work of sor Juana Inés de la Cruz in its center.
