Resumen *

In this chapter, we establish explicit connections between our critique of imperial/colonial science and Monica Heller’s work. We show how current social cultural approaches to languages do not provide the epistemological tools and theoretical frames necessary to undertake research and capture the complexity of Latin America, Africa, and other comparable regions of the Global South. We also question and unsettle knowledge generated from the Global North, the unequal distribution of knowledge capital, and argue for a distributed knowledge. This is an important point that is at the heart of Monica Heller’s understanding of the unequal distribution and dominance of certain perspectives on knowledge.In an effort to trouble further the limitations of imperial science, this chapter draws on three “stories” that resonate with Monica Heller’s critical sociolinguistic perspective. Each individual story is rooted in situated life and research experiences, ethnographic understandings, and emotions. Together, the three stories challenge established epistemologies in linguistics, sociolinguistics, and language education, as well as the structure of power relations that shape the dominant scholarly discourseregarding the “what,” “why,” and “how” of language issues in social life. Coincidentally, the stories aretold by scholars whose life and research trajectories are anchored in Southern epistemic spaces, where “Southern” means “peripheral” more than some homogenous social place. For this reason, the stance is critical insofar asit is a critique of the universalist patronage of science-making, where the productionof concepts is akin to share-holding in the global epistemic “market.” Información suministrada por el agente en SIGEVA
