Abstract This paper highlights the role of the intertemporal rate discount in Economic Growth Models as a key determinant for the emergence of poverty traps. Motivated by the notorious international differences in economic performance, we show that it is possible to find a close connection between poverty and the preferences engendered inside the system. We present a simple model of economic growth, based on Chakraborty´s (1999), with structural endogenous changes. Tree possible solutions are possible: the emergence of poverty traps; time paths that fail to yield sustained growth; and sustained growth solutions.
