The famous Chinese proverb that says “If you want to get rich, build a road” synthesises China’s model of development and its economic projection abroad in the twenty-first century. From the 2000s onwards, Beijing has increased its role as provider of physical infrastructure in African countries, mainly through projects that develop the transport sector; that is, railways, ports, roads and airports. Since Xi Jinping assumed power and launched the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2013, interconnectivity was established as a key mainstay of China’s foreign policy and the overseas expansion of the infrastructure sector was its corollary.In this context, the aim of this chapter is to analyse the infrastructure projects supporting physical connectivity that China has been executing in Nigeria, focusing on the construction of the Lagos-Kano railway and other infrastructure projects linked to it. The question explored here is whether that railway construction is part of an integral and long-term project connected with other economic areas of Nigeria (energy and manufacturing). We suggest that Beijing is implementing “an investment package” in developing countries (like in Africa) led by Chinese state companies in multiple sectors. This is the basis of China’s development and its economic projection abroad.
