Resumen *

In recent decades, it has been registered an increase in the presence of emergingpollutants in wastewater and industrial effluents. Various remediation techniques arebeing used for the treatment of these polluted waters. However, with many of them it isnot possible to remove emerging pollutants such as pharmaceutical compounds. This iswhy the development of efficient and low-cost technologies has become a real challenge.Among them, advanced oxidation processes stand out as a special promising option, inparticular when are combined with heterogeneous catalysis. These processes are basedon the generation of radical species with high oxidizing power, capable of attack andeliminate pollutant molecules. In this sense, iron oxides have been widely studied ascatalysts for these systems. With this premise, the present doctoral thesis focuses on thedevelopment of nanostructured solid, spinel ferrites, to be used as catalyst in advancedoxidation processes emerging pollutant degradation, in particular pharmaceuticalcompounds present in industrial effluents and wastewater.Three series of spinel ferrites were synthesized following the Pechini route. Thetextural and physicochemical properties of the materials obtained were studied usingmultiple characterization techniques. The catalysts obtained were evaluated in the degradation of the pharmaceuticalcompounds, sodium diclofenac and carbamazepine, under a wide range of experimentalconditions. In addition, the material with the best performance was tested in a realeffluent. Therefore, the preliminary results of its evaluation as catalyst in the treatmentof effluents from the olive industry in Cordoba province of Argentina there are presented. The catalytic activity observed was correlated with the physicochemical andstructural properties of the samples. Thus, it was possible to deepen the knowledge inthe field of nanostructured materials, particularly spinel ferrites, which showed promisingresults with great prospects of application in the treatment of wastewater containingemerging pollutants with systems involving advanced oxidation processes.
