Luego de retornar de mi postdoctorado en el Center for Environmental Biotechnology, University of Tennessee, USA, fundé el Laboratorio de Microbiología Ambiental en el año 2004 en el Centro Nacional Patagónico, Puerto Madryn. Luego de retornar de mi postdoctorado en el Center for Environmental Biotechnology, University of Tennessee, USA, fundé el Laboratorio de Microbiología Ambiental en el año 2004 en el Centro Nacional Patagónico, Puerto Madryn. Desde ese momento, hemos desarrollado líneas de investigación que presentan como objetivo común el conocer la estructura y el potencial metabólico de las comunidades microbianas de ambientes costeros de la Patagonia, tendientes a aplicar estos conocimientos en la resolución de problemáticas asociadas con la salud ambiental y humana. Debido a la imposibilidad de cultivar la mayoría de los microorganismos ambientales, en el LMA utilizamos herramientas moleculares independientes del cultivo, tanto basadas en el estudio de genes biomarcadores como estrategias metagenómicas, capaces de capturar de una forma mucho más amplia el potencial genético de dichas comunidades. Hemos generado dos sets de datos metagenómicos de ambientes costeros de zonas frías, que contiene información de interés para el desarrollo de procesos o productos biotecnológicos.
