His main interest is the analyses of miscegenation process between Natives, Europeans and Africans, in the current cosmopolitan population. He has published numerous research papers about these themes, and also some papers about the study of Amerindian populations, in international and local journals. Dr. Avena is member of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Antropología Biológica and the Asociación de Antropología Biológica Argentina, of which he was President (2013-2015). He was organizer of the XI Jornadas Nacionales de Antropología Biológica (Buenos Aires, 2013).
