Summary *

The MgAl2O4 spinel was successfully synthesized using a mechanochemical route that avoids the formation and calcination of its precursors at high temperatures. The method involves a single step in which a g-Al2O3-MgO mixture, a AlO(OH)-MgO mixture or even an a-Al2O3-MgO mixture are milled at room temperature under air atmosphere. The formation of MgAl2O4 occurs faster with g-Al2O3 than with AlO(OH) or a-Al2O3. After 140 h, the mechanochemical treatment of the g-Al2O3-MgO mixture yields a 98% of MgAl2O4.
