The knowledge of genetic diversity is an outstanding aspect of Biological Conservation, because all organic variation depends on genetic diversity, that it is usually correlated to environmental fitness of species. The main objective of the present contribution deals with the analytical methods and results, on estimation of genetic diversity of insect species and populations, for conservation. We give examples of application of RAPD technique to recognize biotypes of Hymenoptera parasitoids used in biological control, and to identify the geographic origin of insect pests of Curculionidae. We discuss the methodology of mitochondiral DNA sequencing to recognize significant evolutionary units for conservation of insect biodiversity and for phylogeographic studies. We also analyze the uses of these methodologies, in genetic and ecological studies of populations, to asses the biological effects of habitat fragmentation.
