A brief description of the matrix isolation technique is presented, highlighting its advantages over other techniques when used in the investigation of molecular structure and reactivity. Illustrative examples of application of the method, together with conventional (non-time-resolved) infrared spectroscopy, for studies of selected families of heterocyclic compounds are discussed. These include thermally and photochemically induced conformational isomerization and tautomerization processes, ring-opening reactions, rearrangements and fragmentation processes as well as aggregation. We address here a broad variety of compounds extending from 3- to 6-membered cycles, and including the elements oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur as heteroatoms.
