The southern central Andes at 37º S is characterized by the debelopment of the Malargúe fold and trust belt locally covered by volcanic rocks of the Late Oligocene-Early Miocene arc to within plate and Quaternary stratovolcanoes and caldera complexes of the retroarc area. The Tromen Volcanic Plateau (37ºS) constitutes one of these Plio-Quaternary volcanic fields. This plateau has been affected by neotectonic structures whose mechanisms are currently discussed. We postulate a model in which the volcanic plateau is developed over a pre-Miocene fold and thrust belt that shows a neotectonic reactivation. Associated with this deformational belt discrete transpressives and transtensives structures modified the drainage pattern incision in the western slope of the Tromen Volcano.
