This chapter aims to describe and interpret the main demographic changes in the population of the Argentine Puna in the early years of XXI century, detecting its internal char- acteristics and the gap between their magnitudes, and its evolution, in relation to the national course and other areas of the northwest of Argentina. Particularly, trends in rates of natural, total, and migratory growth are analyzed, also with changes in population pyramids and the evolution of child mortality and child mortality by diseases of poverty (using the latter as proxy of poverty). To do this, data from the National Population Censuses of 2001 and 2010 were analyzed, as well as the vital statistics of intercensal period, provided by the Department of Health Statistics and Information. Among the attributes that distinguish current population of the Puna, stand their high rurality levels, low population growth, high emigration rate, and poverty.
