The article analyses how the expansion of democracy manifested itself in the sugar region of the province of Tucumán in the northwest of Argentina. To this end, it examines party networks and electoral campaigns led by the sugar industrialists Ernesto Padilla and Manuel García Fernandez. The period covered begins with the coming to power of the Radical Civic Union in 1917 and ends with the coup d’état of 1943. This article re-examines an issue in the studies of sugar businessmen in Tucumán that has been marginalized. It contributes to the debate over the regional effects of the process of democratic expansion.Key Words
