Summary

Within the broad spectrum of topics covered by the social question in Argentina, at the beginning of the twentieth century, a concern about the situation of working women emerged strongly, placing at the center the protection of motherhood (real or potential) in order to avoid one of the most serious problems of that society at the end of the century: infant mortality. In this sense, different actors intervened in debates, reports and projects until in 1907 a law for the protection of maternity and child workers was finally approved. When considering the project prepared by the leadership of the National Council of Women in Argentina in 1902, the purpose of this essay will be to analyze the way in which the legislative attempt shaped the first years of this associative experience.
