Few provinces in Argentina have had such a particular history in relation to their infant mortality as is the case of the province of Tucumán. Inserted in a context of persistent poverty, the pioneering vital statistics records of the late nineteenth century inaugurated the statistical stage of infant mortality, also initiating a path that was characterized - throughout the twentieth century - by marked contrasts and asymmetries, both internal as well as external, without the consolidation of an agroindustrial model (in this case sugar) allowing escape from this lock. The first decades of the 21st century illustrate the persistence and fragmentation existing in society based on this indicator, and even show unusual decisions by the ruling class to lead to a decrease in infant mortality.
