Summary

The aim of this article is to analyze the development of the family business “Azucarera Frías Silva” in comparison with other companies from the Tucuman sugar agro-industrial park. A dialogue between the cases is proposed in order to highlight similarities, point out differences and particularities to avoid being subsumed into generalities. Additionally, it is investigated the mechanisms through which José Frías Silva became the undisputed leader for 60 years. Analyzing the role played as the head of the firm in relation to the company's durability. It is under study the division and the patrimonial recomposition; the company's persistence strategies in two crisis contexts; the administration of the firm and business succession, the fraudulent practices to hold the control of the company despite conflicts between members of the family. Throughout the approach of these topics, it is intended to contribute to the discussion about whether family businesses are ephemeral and inefficient by nature, or if in fac they are an alternative form of capitalist organization in Latin America. The sources that serve as a basis for the research are the Members of the Board of Directors of the Sociedad Anónima Azucarera Justiniano Frías y Cía. from 1927 to 1955. Also the shareholder’s meetings with the annual balance and the family's private archive. This information is quoted and cross-linked with the notarial and testamentary protocols of the public archives, real estate registry and commercial registry.
