What are the characteristics and meanings of life in common in institutions that promote access to and the exercise of rights by young people? How are collective identities linked to personal experiences and demands in such scenarios? What meanings and practices regarding the public state are manifested in these institutions? To answer these questions, in this article we retake and articulate the results of different researches developed between 2009 and 2020 by our team in the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, Argentina. In the first section we unfold the problem, outlining some narratives and conceptualizations about the collective, the individual and the state that go through and put pressure on the definition of the common in Latin American societies. We then present our analysis around two major grammars of the common that we identify in the institutions: the politicization of treatment; the (re)creation and defense of the singularized common. In the conclusions we synthesize and articulate the main findings of the work, proposing some reflections around the (re)construction of the institutional and the public state as guarantors of universal rights in our societies increasingly crossed by singular experiences, needs and demands.
