Although intelligence constitutes a relevant aspect for science and public policies (guiding educational and health guidelines), its conceptualization represents a highly complex work, since various conceptualizations have been developed. There are theories that privilege cognitive aspects, others emotional and social aspects, but also perspectives that focus on the processes that underlie intelligent performance, such as cognitive functions and neurobiological aspects. The problems associated with intelligence refer to different issues related to its definition, development, characteristics, factors, way of measuring it, relationship with other psychological traits, etc. Given that, in general, intelligence is conceived as a highly complex cognitive process in which different abilities intervene, the aim of this article is to carry out a review of the concept of intelligence from a neuropsychological perspective, exploring it from the different psychological schools and from a neurobiological perspective.
