This paper analyzes a series of maps of the Puna de Atacama, a high plateau shared between Argentina and Chile, to establish when the toponym Antofagasta de la Sierra has been used in historical cartography. Consequently, we investigated the ways of naming this place over time, from colonial times to the Republican Period (19th and 20th centuries), placing special emphasis on the last two centuries of the second millennium. This study is based on cartographic sources, considering the jurisdictional changes in the study area in a historical context in which the Andean territory acquired prominence for the three states involved: Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia. Antofagasta began to be documented in modern cartography in the mid-19th century. Antofagasta de la Sierra was formally established on maps after the ruling of the arbitration award in 1899 and is still used today.
