A procedure is presented for the preliminary design of multiproduct batch chemical processes that takes into account the provision of intermediate storage. It finds the position where the storage tanks have to be placed, which may change depending on the product being produced at each time, and the sizes of production units and tanks that minimize the plant investment cost. Two approaches are used: a rigorous algorithm that resorts to integer programming, and a heuristic approach with quite a good performance. Results obtained with a low computational effort show significant reductions in the investment cost if the storage tanks are properly allocated, depending on the product being processed. © 1993.
