Soy Investigador de CONICET y de la UNCuyo, especializado en estudios de adaptación humana a ambientes áridos y de altura del Centro Oeste de Argentina. He realizado investigaciones durante tres décadas sobre cazadores recolectores de Patagonia septentrional (sur de Mendoza) y sobre sociedades agro-pastoriles de tierras altas de la cordillera de Mendoza y San Juan. Articulo distintas líneas de investigación para definir los modos de funcionamiento y procesos de cambio de sociedades humanas con una perspectiva evolutiva que percibe a las sociedades humanas como partes de ecosistemas. En los últimos años he coordinado un programa de estudios geoquímicos destinado a ubicar y caracterizar fuentes de obsidiana y definir la procedencia de obsidianas arqueológicas.
