La comprensión del comportamiento evolutivo de volcanes activos, aplicado tanto al riesgo volcánico como a la prospección de recursos geotermales.En especial, conocer la evolución geológica del sistema volcánico, que, integrada a otros estudios vinculados al campo de la volcanología (sismología, infrasonido, deformación, dinámica de fluidos, entre otros), permite definir un modelo conceptual de estos complejos volcánicos.
