La Dra. Ing. María Cecilia Fernández Puchol enfoca su desarrollo profesional en el área de Ingeniería de Procesos, siendo la simulación, el control y la optimización las ramas más estudiadas. En cuanto al control, se especializa en sistemas no lineales, aplicando una técnica de control basado en álgebra lineal y métodos numéricos; mientras que respecto a la optimización, hace hincapié en la optimización dinámica mediante una técnica basada en la serie de Fourier y polinomios ortonormales; ambas estrategias desarrolladas por su grupo de trabajo y aplicadas, mayormente, en bioprocesos, sin embargo, las metodologías estudiadas pueden ser aplicadas a sistemas de distinta índole.
