S&T Expertise*

Dr. Echavarria developed and validated a PCR method for adenoviruses detection permitting the detection of the virus in blood and documenting the presence of adenovirus viremia for the first time and its association with disseminated disease (Lancet 2001). This work allowed a deeper understanding of the pathogenic properties of the virus, and its range of clinical presentations, especially in immunocompromised patients. She collaborated with investigations on respiratory outbreaks of adenoviruses among military recruits. She developed a real time PCR approach for adenoviruses diagnosis and quantification. She extended these tools to epidemiologic studies designed to show adenovirus presence and persistence on environmental surfaces, in settings capable of disease transmission. She is actively involved in research projects involving respiratory viruses and those infecting immunocompromised patients and in studies using rapid diagnostic methods for more accurate use of antimicrobials. She is also involved in studies evaluating the costs associated with respiratory infections. *Information provided by the agent in SIGEVA
