Soy Licenciado (1981) y Doctor (1987) en Ciencias Biológicas (FCEN-UBA). Realicé estudios posdoctorales en los Departamentos de Zoología de las Universidades de Cambridge (1988-1990) y Oxford (1990). Entre 1997 y 2022 fui profesor de la FCEN-UBA (adjunto, asociado y titular). Actualmente soy Profesor Emérito de la FCEN-UBA e Investigador Superior del CONICET. Investigo en temas de ecología, comportamiento y conservación. He publicado >160 trabajos en revistas científicas internacionales y dirigido 20 Tesis de Doctorado. Soy Fellow de la International Ornithologists' Union (2006) y de la American Ornithologists' Union (2011). Fui Editor Asociado de Auk, Ardeola, Austral Ornithology y Bird Conservation International, miembro del Consejo Mundial de BirdLife International (1999-2004) y soy vicepresidente de la International Ornithologists' Union (2022-2026). Recibí la Alexander F. Skutch Medal de la Association of Field Ornithologists (2017) y el William Brewster Memorial Award de la Americal Ornithological Society (2024).
