High temperatures alter the redox state of electron transporters and the chloroplast stroma, leading to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Beyond causing oxidative damage, ROS act as key retrograde signals from chloroplasts to the nucleus. My research aims to understand how shifts in subcellular redox status affect this retrograde signaling and shape acclimation and tolerance responses to heat stress. High temperatures also disrupts hormonal balances and signaling pathways that regulate plant immunity. In this context, autophagy may play a regulatory role by selectively degrading signaling and metabolic components that influence defense responses. We are investigating how autophagy modulates plant immunity under elevated temperatures. Our work in Arabidopsis is allowing us to identify conserved mechanisms that are being validated in crop species such as soybean (Glycine max), with the goal of enhancing resilience to heat temperatures in a context of climate change.
