El estudio de la evolución de las gramíneas implica no solo su desarrollo per se como uno de los linajes más abarcativos y diversificado de las plantas superiores; sino también de un grupo que coevolucionó con muchos de los mamíferos actuales y en especial con el ser humano. Los estudios de microrestos y en especial de fitolitos resultan una herramienta muy valiosa para comprender estos procesos que ocurren a partir del cenozoico.
